• Caballo Blanco 2017, in Andalucía 360

Bodega Sierra Almagrera has taken part in a tasting at the congress

Bodega Sierra Almagrera with Caballo Blanco 2017 has been present in one of the tastings organised in Andalucía 360 by World Premium Experience.

This event was held in Seville on 2 and 3 October, bringing together the leading names in gastronomy, oenology and mixology at a national and international level.

Juan Manuel Moreno, President of the Andalusian Regional Government, inaugurated the third edition of this Congress, which took place at the Cartuja Center in the Andalusian capital.

At the tasting led by Ignacio de Miguel of Andalusian red wines, those who took part were able to taste Caballo Blanco 2017, our new vintage. Seven other wineries from the region participated, demonstrating the quality of red wines from the south of Spain.

The Bodega Marcelino Serrano winery in Alcalá la Real (Jaén) presented the red wine Privilegio de los Reyes Católicos 2014.

Two wineries from Ronda (Málaga) participated. Pasos Largos with a 2014 vintage and Cortijo Aguilares with Tadeo 2016.

Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz) was also present with two other wineries. Finca Moncloa with the 10 Barricas collection and Tesalia with its ARX 2016 red wine.

Seville was represented by Bodega La Margarita from Constantina with the wine Zancuo 2017.

And Almería had two samples of its red wines with Cepa Fuente La Reina from Bodegas y Viñedos Laujar and Caballo Blanco 2017 from Bodega Sierra Almagrera.

Our new vintage of Caballo Blanco continues to maintain the elegance of its aromas, reminiscent of forest fruits - raspberry and blackberry - and liquorice. It has an intense garnet red colour and a scent of wet earth, sea breeze, iodine and salt.

Caballo Blanco 2017, which will soon be on sale, continues to be a pioneering, different and unique wine.

    Caballo Blanco Wine

Review published in the newspaper "La Razón" by Andrés Sánchez Magro

From time to time it is a good idea to get away from the big wine regions in search of unusual and historically faithful efforts. In the little-known Almería, specifically in the eastern part of the province, there is a winery called Sierra Almagrera that continues a tradition dating back more than three millennia, dating back to vines planted by the Phoenicians in these parts. Although this poetic memory does not tarnish a red wine with many contemporary characteristics, because, as we have been finding out recently, the unashamed commitment to freshness and fruit is the hallmark of this wine. To smooth out some imbalances, two years of good French oak are used, which may be the rounded counterpoint. Aromatic intensity especially for a full-bodied palate, but which could do with some fine-tuning. We like its sinuous aromatic complexes and some mineral touches that I imagine will be accentuated vintage after vintage. In the Cuevas de Almanzora, at medium altitude, a wine described as a signature wine is expressed, which in this case is not a rhetorical exercise.

The same, joining forces between producers, is what Diego Gea, a businessman in the hospitality sector who in 2006 founded Bodega de Serón in this village between the Filabres and Estancias mountain ranges in Almería, the only winery in the north of the province until recently, is looking for. "This area was a communication point between the coast and the interior of the peninsula and there have always been vineyards for table grapes and for private winemaking," he says. He discovered an estate with old Tempranillo and started with the idea of making wine in a municipality known mainly for its ham drying sheds.

Gea saw the vineyard as the perfect complement to the ham production and set to work with the winemaking process, planting Syrah, Moscatel and Sauvignon Blanc on a total of six hectares in soils with a high iron content. Oenologist Cristina Calvache, who also has her own winemaking project in Alboloduy, at the foot of Almeria's Sierra Nevada mountain range, is in charge of the winemaking process as a consultant.

Gea makes around 20,000 bottles a year of which he sells the entire production in the province, mainly thanks to the tourism that populates the coast, although he acknowledges that "we don't live off the bodega". He does recall failed projects that have ended up disappearing and blames it on a lack of adaptation to the market or the products.

He sees the future of Almeria wines going through the unity of producers, as his notion of the consumer tells him that the majority profile is that of a tourist who knows that Almeria exists but does not know specific areas, so that a differentiation in terms of regions or places does not add value to his project: "We have to take advantage of the moment of our gastronomy, its strength, to make us stronger. We have been around for years and we sell everything", says this part-time winemaker who has found his formula for success with a solitary winery.

At about the same latitude, but close to the coast, in Cuevas de Almanzora, is the Sierra Almagrera project. It was launched in 2006 from four hectares of vineyards that make up an orchard in the middle of an arid, almost lunar landscape that nevertheless takes advantage of the relative altitude, 350 metres above sea level, and the refreshing breeze from the Mediterranean, which is barely 15 kilometres away. Its promoter is José Miguel García, former manager of a telephone company and owner of a company that exploits products made from aloe vera, including one that mitigates the effects of chemotherapy.

José Miguel García, who is assisted by oenologist Ignacio Figueroa, a technician at Bodegas Raíz de Guzmán (Ribera del Duero), says that his vineyard, surrounded by nothingness from the point of view of vine cultivation, has the oldest viticultural history in Spain: he claims that the Phoenicians planted the first vines on the peninsula in this area three thousand years ago.

The tradition was interrupted for three millennia until the introduction of what seems like a well thought-out varietal catalogue, with Monastrell, Garnacha, Syrah and the inevitable Tempranillo. In 2013 it launched its first wine, the red Caballo Blanco.

    • The winery's wines will also be present at the 33rd Salón Gourmets, to be held from 8 to 11 April in Madrid, where the most prestigious national and international food and beverage companies will be exhibiting their products at the largest exhibition dedicated to delicatessen products in Europe.

Madrid, April 8th 2019 - The Levante of Almería is positioned as one of the favourite areas thanks to the wine "Caballo Blanco" 2015 from Bodega Sierra Almagrera. One of the few wines from Almeria that has obtained 94 entering the "Guía de vinos Gourmet 2019". It is not common for a new wine to enter this list the first year it is released on the market, but it is not surprising that prestigious winemakers have noticed it for its quality and authorship. In this wine, the virgin land where its vineyard is located remains. Elegant aromas, hints of red fruit - raspberry, blackberry - and liquorice. Marked aromas of earth, minerals, hints of sea breeze, iodine and salt. Splendid in the mouth, fine woods, balsamic, roasted. Structured, fleshy, ample and, of course, unique.

    33rd Gourmets Fair

This year Bodega Sierra Almagrera will be present at the 33rd Salón Gourmets (SG), the Quality Food and Beverages Fair, which opens its doors again from 8 to 11 April in an edition that is expected to be grandiose, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The most prestigious national and international firms will be exhibiting their products at the largest show dedicated to delicatessen products in Europe. An avant-garde showcase that has become an essential event for professionals in the agri-food sector, which they attend because it is a unique opportunity each year to close important business deals.

Attendees will be able to taste Caballo Blanco, 2016 and Sierra Almagrera. The winery is located at Stand 8A40 -in the area reserved for ATEM, our wine distributor in Madrid-.

    More about Bodega Sierra Almagrera

Bodega Sierra Almagrera opened its doors in 2015 in Burjulú, Cuevas del Almanzora (Almería), an area where there had never been vines, beyond the vestiges of the Phoenicians, who more than 3,000 years ago dared to plant on the coast, leaving the mountains and highlands as impossible. Now, the promoters of this exciting project, José Miguel García, founder of the company; Domingo Haro, cellar master and Ignacio Figueroa, oenologist; backed by the company AgroecoPark, dedicated to the cultivation and production of organic cosmetic and food products, are working to put the wines born from these vineyards, which grow on a clay loam soil with reddish tones marked by fire by the mineral decomposition of its parent rock, where they deserve to be. The terrain is situated at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, where cool breezes from the mountains on the shores of the Mediterranean predominate.

More than 2,000 visitors have enjoyed the II Food and Agriculture Fair "Almanzora Gourmet", which has been held this weekend in Cuevas del Almanzora with a greater success of participation than the previous edition. Figures such as these and the 5,000 tapas tasted during these days endorse the success of a fair that shows the best that the region has to offer. The mayor, Antonio Fernández, is convinced that "this fair, despite its youth, will grow and consolidate its place in the gastronomic calendar of Almería".
